Can a little boy beat a giant? Come and see! Jesus and his little friend sat together on a sunny hill. It was story time! Long ago, there lived a shepherd boy called David. He loved God very much. David looked after his daddy’s sheep. He played music and sang to God.

One day, his daddy Jesse said, “Take this bread and cheese to your brothers.” His big brothers were far away, with King Saul and his soldiers. So off went David, skip, skip, skip, over the green hills, with his basket. He came to a valley. There were two big camps, one on each hill.

Then out stepped a giant soldier! His name was Goliath. Goliath was tall, tall, tall. He was much taller than a door! He had a shiny helmet, a big shield and a very loud voice. Every day he shouted, “Send someone to fight me! Who will come?”

The soldiers felt very scared. They hid behind their shields and stayed still. For forty days, Goliath shouted. And for forty days, nobody went. But David was not scared. He asked, “Why does this giant tease God’s people?” His big brother Eliab frowned. “Who is minding your sheep?” he asked.

But David kept asking questions. Soon, King Saul wanted to meet him. King Saul looked at David. “You are only a boy,” he said kindly. David smiled. “Once, a lion and a bear came for my lambs. God kept me safe then. God will keep me safe now.”

King Saul nodded slowly. “Go,” he said, “and the Lord be with you.” The king gave David his own armour. A helmet! A heavy coat! Clank, clank, wobble! It was much too big and much too heavy. David took it all off. “I cannot walk in this,” he said.

Instead, he took his shepherd’s stick and his little sling, just as he always did. He went down to the stream. Splash, splash, went the water. He picked up one, two, three, four, five smooth stones. Can you count them too? He put them in his shepherd’s bag. Now he was ready.

Big or small, God is with us all! Can you say it too? Little David walked out into the valley, all by himself. Goliath looked down and laughed. “You are just a boy,” he boomed. But David stood tall and did not run. He called out in a clear, brave voice.

“You come with a sword and a spear. But I come in the name of the Lord! The battle belongs to God,” said David. “Everyone will see how great he is.” David put his hand in his bag. He took out one stone. He put it in his sling. Swing, swing, swing, round and round went the sling!

Whoosh! The smooth stone flew through the air, fast and straight. It hit the giant right on his forehead. Bonk! Goliath wobbled and tottered, this way and that. Then he tumbled down. Thud! The big giant was down on the grass. The little boy had won!

The soldiers cheered and cheered. “Hooray for God! Hooray for David!” Everyone was so happy. God had been with David all along! David did not win because he was big. He won because God was with him. Jesus smiled at the girl. Sometimes we feel small, just like David.

But God loves you so much. Big or small, God is with us all! Tell a grown-up your favourite part! Bye bye, friends, see you next time!

He took his staff in his hand, and chose for himself five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag which he had. His sling was in his hand; and he came near to the Philistine. Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin; but I come to you in the name of Yahweh of Armies, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.”1 Samuel 17:40, 45 (World English Bible)
